Mumbai: KEM Hospital and Medical College has placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on 15 days of forced leave and barred her from entering the hospital campus, medical college, and hostel premises following a controversy triggered by a viral stand-up comedy video clip.
The action comes after a preliminary internal inquiry identified Sejal Pawar as the person featured in the widely circulated video that sparked backlash on social media.
Officials said that the statements attributed to the student in the video appeared inappropriate at first glance and were deemed unacceptable by the institution.
Following the inquiry, the college decided to take interim disciplinary action while the matter is reviewed further.
As part of the decision, Sejal Pawar has been placed under a 15-day suspension-like leave and will not be allowed to participate in any academic activities during this period.
She has also been handed over to her family for the duration of the leave, officials confirmed.
The institution said the move was taken not only as an interim disciplinary measure but also considering the intense public attention and social media reactions surrounding the incident.
Officials added that the step was intended to ensure her safety and well-being during the ongoing controversy.
During the internal inquiry, hospital officials said Sejal Pawar became emotional and was seen crying continuously. She has reportedly expressed regret over the incident in her statement.
Considering the psychological impact of the controversy, the institution has advised her to undergo professional counselling to help prevent depression or severe stress.
The matter remains under further review by the college administration.
