Vientiane: The National Assembly of Laos has approved ten key pieces of legislation as part of efforts to modernise the country’s legal framework and support sustainable national development. The laws were passed on Wednesday during the ninth ordinary session of the Assembly’s ninth legislature, chaired by Vice President Chalern Yiapaoher.

Five of the laws are newly enacted, targeting sectors seen as vital to Laos’s future. These include a Law on Cybersecurity, intended to bolster digital infrastructure and guard against online threats, and a Law on Social Welfare, aimed at improving services for vulnerable groups and strengthening the national welfare system, reports Lao News Agency.

Over the years, Vientiane has been enacting steady legal reforms to support its transition towards a more modern, inclusive, and resilient economy, in line with its long-term national development plans, as well as promote sustainable growth.

The Law on Public Prosecutors is designed to enhance transparency and fairness in the justice system, while the Law on General Education focuses on raising educational standards and expanding access to learning across the country.

Another new measure, the Law on Cultivation, supports the adoption of sustainable and modern farming methods.

Alongside the new laws, the Assembly also approved amendments to five existing statutes. These include updates to the Law on Medicines and Medical Products, aimed at improving the regulation and safety of pharmaceuticals, and revisions to the Law on Income Tax, intended to encourage economic growth through a more equitable tax structure.

Changes to the Law on Signs are set to improve public information standards, while revisions to the Law on the Supreme People’s Court seek to enhance judicial efficiency. Updates to the Law on Irrigation aim to improve water management and support agricultural productivity.
