LPG Crisis: Centre tightens control over fuel supply chain; Strict orders issued to States

The Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas held a high-level review meeting with states and union territories to assess fuel supply across India. The government assured that petroleum and LPG supply remains stable and urged strict monitoring against hoarding, diversion, and misinformation.

New Delhi: The Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas held a meeting with the Additional Chief Secretaries and Principal Secretaries (Food & Civil Supplies) of all States and Union Territories to review the fuel supply situation across the country. The objective of the meeting was to ensure smooth supply of petroleum fuels in the country and to review preparedness to deal with any potential crisis.

Government briefed on supply improvement measures

In the meeting, the Secretary (Petroleum) informed the states about the steps taken by the Central Government to facilitate the supply of essential petroleum fuels. He appealed to all states and Union Territories to cooperate with the Central Government in controlling the situation.

Special Emphasis on LPG Distribution

The Secretary directed the states to actively manage LPG distribution and ensure uninterrupted supply to domestic consumers and essential sectors on a priority basis. He also stressed that states should closely monitor hoarding, irregular distribution, and rumors, as these could create unnecessary panic.

Several states commended, strict action directed

The meeting commended states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh for their efforts to curb irregularities through raids and strict action. Other states were also directed to strengthen similar monitoring and enforcement and take exemplary action against offenders.

Curbing Rumors and Assurance of Supply Stability

The meeting also clarified that there are no disruptions in LPG supplies to migrant workers and that supplies remain normal. The Secretary stated that targeted distribution of 5-kg small LPG cylinders may be carried out as needed. Efforts are also underway to ensure smooth supply of LPG to autos.

The Petroleum Secretary appealed to all states and union territories to continuously monitor the situation and cooperate to maintain a stable supply system. He said that immediate action should be taken against rumours and misinformation so that public confidence is maintained and no panic spreads.
