Mamata Alleges House Arrest Ahead Of Serampore Rally (Img: Dynamite News)
Kolkata: Former West Bengal chief minister and TMC (Mamata faction) supremo Mamata Banerjee alleged that her party leaders had been kept under "house arrest" and are being stopped from attending party rally in Serampore. She also claimed that BJP workers had taken over the route leading to the programme venue.
Banerjee alleged that she too was being prevented from leaving for the rally. She accused the police and the BJP government of turning a "blind eye to attacks" on TMC leaders and workers. She said she would nevertheless travel to the venue and address the gathering.
"We have been kept under house arrest. I am not allowed to go to the venue of the rally. But I will go and address the rally. Stop me if you can," Banerjee said.
The former CM also said that BJP workers had taken control of the road leading to the rally and claimed that police personnel were absent from the area.
"BJP goons have taken over the route to the rally venue. There are no police personnel," she alleged, referring to the alleged attack on TMC leaders travelling to Serampore.
Banerjee maintained that the rally would go ahead, pointing out that it had received permission from the court.
"The rally is being held with the permission of the court. It is the duty of the police and the administration to ensure its smooth functioning. But the police have turned a blind eye," she said.
The Mamata Banerjee alleged that the incidents amounted to "atrocities" and questioned why the administration was allowing the situation to develop.
"Such atrocities are seen in African countries. Such atrocities are not even happening in UP and Bihar, which are also BJP-ruled. Then why has the ruling BJP unleashed so much terror on the streets?" she said.
Her comments came amid allegations from the TMC that its leaders and workers had been targeted while travelling to the Serampore rally.
According to party sources, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh's car was allegedly surrounded by a group carrying black flags in the Uttarpara area of Hooghly district while he was travelling to Serampore for the meeting.
The group allegedly raised slogans and hurled eggs and stones at Ghosh's vehicle, the TMC claimed.
The party has repeatedly alleged that BJP supporters were responsible for such incidents. The BJP, however, has rejected the allegations.
The claims have added to the political confrontation in West Bengal, with the TMC accusing the administration of failing to ensure security around its programme, while the BJP has denied involvement in the alleged incidents.
