Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has delivered a sharp retort to a statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This dispute began over the issue of fish production and has now escalated into a war of political accusations and counter-accusations.

The Clash Over Fish Production

In a speech, Prime Minister Modi had stated that West Bengal is failing to produce enough fish to meet its own requirements and is forced to import fish from other states. He further pledged that if the BJP comes to power, the state will be made self-reliant in this regard.

Mamata Banerjee strongly objected to this, asserting that the claim constitutes entirely false information. She asserted that Bengal is robust in terms of fish production and that the people of the state enjoy the freedom to choose their own food.

The Issue of Dietary Freedom

Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of denying people the freedom to consume non-vegetarian food in states governed by the party. She emphasized that in Bengal, people are free to eat whatever they prefer, and this freedom is an integral part of their culture.

Major Allegations Regarding Voter Lists

Leveling another major allegation against the BJP, Mamata Banerjee claimed that the names of approximately 9 million (90 lakh) people have been removed from the voter lists. According to her, this constitutes a conspiracy aimed at seizing power.

She categorically stated that her party would fight this issue on both political and legal fronts to ensure that the people's right to vote is safeguarded.

The Issue of Culture and Language

The chief minister also alleged that the BJP is attempting to divide Bengal and is making efforts to suppress the state's language and culture. She asserted that Bengal is renowned for its unique identity and traditions, and she would not allow these to be undermined.

Political Atmosphere Heats Up

Following this entire controversy, the political climate in West Bengal has become even more heated. On one hand, the BJP speaks of development and change, while on the other, the TMC asserts its commitment to protecting its policies and the state's identity.

What began as an issue concerning fish production has now escalated into a major political controversy. This confrontation is likely to intensify further in the coming days, as both sides continue to trade accusations against one another.
