New Delhi: India’s coal sector witnessed a landmark year in 2025, marked by record-breaking production, major policy reforms, sustainability initiatives, and improved governance. The Ministry of Coal’s Year-End Review highlights strong progress toward energy security and responsible mining.

Record Coal Production Strengthens Energy Security

In FY 2024–25, India achieved its highest-ever coal production of 1,047.52 million tonnes, registering a 4.98% year-on-year growth. During calendar year 2025, total production stood at 1,042.90 million tonnes, including 203.70 million tonnes from captive and commercial mines, ensuring steady fuel supply for power and industry.

Expansion Through New Mine Allocations and Reforms

To boost capacity and competition, 33 coal mines were allocated in CY 2025. Policy reforms such as Coal SETU and the revised SHAKTI policy enhanced flexibility, accessibility, and transparency in coal distribution, benefiting both producers and consumers.

CSR and Environmental Sustainability in Focus

Coal India Limited (CIL) spent ₹885.44 crore on CSR activities, impacting education, health, and community development. As part of green initiatives, over 60 lakh saplings were planted, reinforcing the sector’s commitment to environmental conservation alongside production growth.

Energy Efficiency Delivers Significant Savings

Energy efficiency initiatives across coal PSUs resulted in annual savings of 214.44 million energy units, reducing operational costs and carbon footprint. These measures align with India’s broader climate goals and sustainable development agenda.

Clean Governance and Special Campaign Success

Under Special Campaign 5.0, the Ministry of Coal secured 1st rank in Space Freed, demonstrating effective disposal of pending files, scrap management, and improved office efficiency. The campaign also generated substantial revenue through optimized resource utilization.
