Chennai: Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of weakening India’s democratic foundations through alleged “vote chori”, calling him “Mogambo Modi” and warning that he would be held accountable for his actions against the country.
Addressing the sixth edition of his youth outreach initiative, Chhatron Ki Goonj, Gandhi alleged that the government was suppressing dissent and using the police and BJP workers to target students. Before Chennai, the initiative had been held in Kota, Dehradun, Prayagraj, Pune and Indore.
“PM Modi is silencing voices; as you saw in Delhi, the entire city was shut down, and police were beating students. The BJP also unleashed its goondas who beat up students,” Rahul said.

He claimed the Prime Minister’s political approach was nearing its end and warned of consequences over what he described as crimes against the country.

“The problem is, Mr Modi does not understand that the game is over. The drama that he has been doing for the past 15 years is coming to an end. We will ensure that Modi pays for the crimes he has committed against the country,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Gandhi described the Prime Minister as “Mogambo Modi”, comparing him to the iconic villain played by the late Amrish Puri in the 1987 Bollywood film Mr. India. During the speech, a scene from the film appeared on the screen behind him, with Modi’s face superimposed on the character.
The Congress leader urged students not to be afraid and said those responsible for attacking the Constitution and democracy would be brought to justice.

Gandhi also accused Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of launching a “full-scale attack” on Tamil culture, language and history. He criticised the government’s language policy and the three-language formula under the National Education Policy.
“Amit Shah openly says that Hindi will be imposed on Tamil Nadu. It is Modi and Shah who are stifling curiosity. This is happening through the New Education Policy; a three-language formula has been imposed,” he said.
He further alleged that Tamil Nadu was being penalised through the proposed delimitation exercise, adding, “We will not allow Modi to attack Tamil culture, language and history.”
Gandhi argued that questioning authority was essential for progress and that curiosity formed the basis of democracy. He accused the Prime Minister and the Home Minister of undermining that principle.
“Modi and Shah are destroying the foundation of curiosity,” he alleged.
