New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is expected to regain momentum in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating favourable conditions for its further advancement from June 23. The development comes after the monsoon remained largely stagnant over parts of southern Maharashtra since June 8.
According to weather officials, the monsoon is expected to move into additional regions of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar. It is also likely to make its onset over Chhattisgarh in the coming days.
Meteorological forecasts suggest that if current weather patterns continue, the monsoon could reach Delhi during the first week of July, bringing relief from persistent summer heat in the national capital.
While the monsoon prepares to advance further inland, eastern and northeastern states are already experiencing active rainfall conditions. West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to witness very heavy rainfall, prompting weather authorities to issue high-level alerts in the region.
Heavy to extremely heavy rain is also expected across several northeastern states during the week. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining areas have already recorded significant rainfall activity over the past 24 hours.
Odisha, Jharkhand and parts of Bihar are also expected to receive widespread showers as monsoon conditions strengthen.
Even as rainfall intensifies in eastern India, parts of central and western India remain under the grip of intense heat. Coastal and central Maharashtra continue to face heatwave conditions, while eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha region are expected to experience high temperatures until June 25.
Some areas of Telangana and Bihar may also witness heatwave-like conditions for the next few days.
Weather experts indicate that temperatures may gradually decline once monsoon activity expands further. A noticeable drop in temperatures is expected across Maharashtra and Telangana after June 21, while northwestern India could witness slightly cooler conditions after June 22.
The coming week is expected to bring a significant shift in weather patterns across large parts of the country.
