Maharashtra: Mumbai and neighbouring districts Thane and Palghar are under a red alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning for heavy rainfall. The advisory indicates strong rain activity in the coming hours, with officials warning of possible waterlogging, traffic problems and flooding in vulnerable locations.

Civic authorities are closely monitoring areas that are more likely to face water accumulation during heavy spells.

City Records Over 100 mm Rainfall

Mumbai witnessed intense rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several locations receiving more than 100 mm of rain. The heavy showers led to water entering the Andheri subway and other low-lying areas, forcing authorities to divert traffic temporarily.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), rainfall between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning was highest in the eastern suburbs, which recorded an average of 109 mm. The western suburbs received around 87 mm, while the island city recorded approximately 86 mm.

Mankhurd Records Highest Rainfall

Data from automatic rain gauges across Mumbai showed that Mankhurd recorded the highest rainfall during the period, receiving 170.4 mm.

Other areas also witnessed heavy showers. Byculla reported 162.52 mm, Mumbai Central recorded 142.43 mm, and Wadala received about 127 mm of rainfall.

In the western suburbs, Bandra Kurla Complex recorded 132.4 mm, while Borivali received 126 mm. The Dindoshi fire station area also recorded significant rainfall of around 123 mm.

Morning Showers Add To Concerns

Rain activity continued on Wednesday morning, with some parts of Mumbai receiving light rain mixed with intense spells.

During the one-hour period between 7 am and 8 am, Andheri West recorded the highest rainfall at 39 mm. Andheri East received 34 mm, while Bandra West recorded 24 mm.

The heavy showers caused waterlogging in parts of Andheri, affecting road movement and leading to traffic management measures.

Authorities Keep Watch

The BMC and emergency teams remain on alert as the city continues to experience strong monsoon conditions. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow official updates as rainfall activity continues.
