Mumbai: Mumbai is expected to experience a warm and humid Sunday, with only a slim possibility of light rainfall, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). After several days of consistent monsoon showers, the city is witnessing a temporary break in rainfall activity, bringing sunnier skies and rising temperatures.
The IMD has forecast a maximum temperature of around 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to remain close to 28 degrees Celsius. Satellite observations indicate a noticeable reduction in cloud cover over Mumbai, contributing to the warmer conditions across the city.
Weather experts attribute this shift to the southwest monsoon progressing further into northern parts of the country, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. As a result, rainfall over Mumbai has reduced significantly for the time being.
Despite the dry spell, the IMD has placed Mumbai and neighbouring Thane under a green alert, indicating that only light rainfall is likely and no major weather-related disruptions are anticipated. However, officials have advised residents to stay updated, as monsoon weather can change rapidly.
Mumbai is also expected to witness two high tides during the day. The first, and higher, tide is forecast at 10:24 am, with sea levels expected to reach 4.27 metres. Another high tide is likely around 10:00 pm, reaching approximately 3.69 metres.
Authorities have urged people living in low-lying coastal areas to remain cautious, particularly during high tide hours, as even brief spells of rain could lead to waterlogging in vulnerable locations.
Rainfall recorded over the previous 24 hours remained minimal across the city. Mumbai received only 0.29 mm of rain, while both the eastern and western suburbs reported no measurable rainfall during the same period. The subdued rainfall reflects a temporary pause in monsoon activity rather than the end of the rainy season.
The city's air quality remained in the satisfactory category on Sunday morning, with Mumbai recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 59. Several monitoring stations reported healthy readings, while Deonar registered the highest AQI at 96. Across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan also maintained satisfactory air quality levels, indicating minimal health concerns for residents.
