Manipur IED attack case (Img Ai Generated)
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested S. Palal Thadou, identified by police as the ‘finance chief’ of the banned outfit United Kuki National Army (UKNA), in connection with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in Manipur’s Bishnupur district. The accused was allegedly involved in the April 7 blast at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai area of Moirang town, which resulted in the deaths of two minors and left another person injured.
The arrest, carried out on Wednesday, marks the first major breakthrough in the case registered over the IED attack. Following his arrest, Thadou was produced before the special NIA court in Imphal, which sent him to 10 days of police custody for further investigation.
According to police officials, Thadou was not only involved in the April IED attack but was also allegedly associated with several other incidents of violence and firing in the state.
Investigators stated that his name surfaced in connection with a bomb blast at Tronglaobi on December 16 last year, besides a firing incident reported in Molnom during the night of February 3–4 this year.
Police further alleged that Thadou played a role in a shooting incident in the Kaprang area on July 4, a day before Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh’s scheduled visit to Churachandpur. He was also linked to other firing incidents reported on July 4 and March 26, according to officials.
The NIA stated that after taking over the investigation into the April 7 IED attack, it re-registered the case on April 23 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The case was initially registered at Moirang Police Station. The agency is now conducting a detailed investigation to uncover the wider conspiracy, identify other individuals involved, and establish links between the accused and banned militant activities.
