New Delhi: Hours after climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital following a deterioration in his health, his wife Gitanjali J. Angmo said that no oral or intravenous treatment should be administered without the consent of his family and doctors who have been monitoring him throughout his hunger strike.

In a post on X, Angmo said she was present at Safdarjung Hospital and requested the authorities not to provide any medical treatment to Wangchuk without consulting her, other family members, and his long-term medical team. She said the doctors had been closely tracking his health over the past 20 days.

Hospital Shifted After Health Worsened

Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning after his health reportedly deteriorated during his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Delhi Police said the decision was taken in compliance with the Delhi High Court's directions and on the advice of medical experts.

According to police, some protesters attempted to obstruct the process while Wangchuk was being shifted, leading to brief commotion at the protest site. However, officials said the transfer was completed safely and appealed to protesters to vacate the area peacefully.

High Court Had Ordered Regular Health Monitoring

Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily medical assessments of Wangchuk, observing that the life of every citizen is valuable and that necessary medical intervention should be ensured if required.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. Before being hospitalised, he had also called for a "Chalo Sansad" march to Parliament on July 20, coinciding with the start of the Monsoon Session.
