New Delhi: Outgoing Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday said the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China remains stable despite being sensitive, highlighting that the Indian and Chinese militaries conduct more than 1,100 interactions every year to prevent misunderstandings and manage routine border issues.
Speaking to ANI, General Dwivedi said sustained military and diplomatic engagements over the past year have played a key role in preserving peace along the border. He noted that whenever local issues arise due to differing perceptions of the LAC, both sides rely on established communication channels, including military hotlines, flag meetings and commander-level discussions, to resolve them.
According to the Army Chief, these mechanisms have enabled both countries to continue routine border management activities while maintaining stability.
General Dwivedi said the 2024-25 period witnessed several positive developments in India-China relations. These include the formation of an Experts Group on boundary delimitation, a Working Group on border management, the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, plans to restart direct flights, progress on reopening border trade through designated passes and measures to ease visa procedures.
He said the disengagement agreements between the two countries have also contributed to improving the overall situation along the border.
The Army Chief reaffirmed that India's priorities remain maintaining peace along the LAC, resolving local issues through dialogue and ensuring a robust military deployment to deter any potential threat.
He added that the Indian Army continues to strengthen border infrastructure, logistics, surveillance systems and operational preparedness to safeguard national interests. While India remains committed to dialogue, General Dwivedi stressed that the Army's approach is based on "peace through strength" and that its deployment along the northern borders will remain firm, vigilant and fully capable of protecting the country's territorial integrity.
