Safdarjung Doctors Write To President Over Wangchuk Hospitalisation (Img: X)
New Delhi: Resident doctors’ associations at AIIMS Delhi and VMMC-Safdarjung Hospital have separately written to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking an independent inquiry into the police action at Jantar Mantar and clarity over activist Sonam Wangchuk’s continued hospitalisation.
The doctors’ bodies said the decision on whether Wangchuk required further admission should be based only on independent clinical assessment. They also stressed that every competent patient has the right to dignity, informed consent and the freedom to refuse or discontinue treatment.
The VMMC-Safdarjung Hospital RDA said reports that Wangchuk was allegedly not allowed to leave against medical advice, despite being medically competent, raised serious concerns about personal liberty and established medical ethics.
It said hospitals are meant to provide treatment and should not function as places of detention unless restrictions are backed by law and due process.
The AIIMS RDA echoed similar concerns, saying any departure from the principle of informed consent must have transparent legal justification.
The doctors also sought an impartial and time-bound investigation into the events at Jantar Mantar, where police used force while stopping protesters during the CJP-led Parliament march.
The AIIMS RDA referred to reports of lathi-charge, tear gas and physical force against students, doctors and other demonstrators. It also flagged footage allegedly showing police personnel with covered faces and name badges.
The associations urged the President to ensure accountability, protect the constitutional right to peaceful protest and examine allegations of excessive force.
Describing themselves as apolitical bodies, the doctors said genuine public concerns should be addressed through dialogue while safeguarding both democratic freedoms and patients’ rights.
