New Delhi: Losing a smartphone while travelling on a crowded train or railway platform can be stressful. However, the Ministry of Communications’ Sanchar Saathi initiative offers a simple and effective way to secure your data and track a lost or stolen device using technology.

Here’s what you should do if your phone goes missing:

Step 1: Secure Your Phone Immediately

As soon as you realise your phone is lost, focus on protecting your personal data. Using another device, log in to the Sanchar Saathi portal or app, which allows users to remotely block and secure lost or stolen mobile phones.

Step 2: Report the Loss and Block the IMEI

To prevent misuse of the device, follow these steps:

File a report on the Sanchar Saathi platform

Block the IMEI number, which disables the phone on all mobile networks, making it unusable for calls or data

Blocking the IMEI also helps stop the phone from being resold or used illegally.

Step 3: Tracking and Recovery

Once the phone is reported and the IMEI is blocked, the system assists authorities in tracing the device through telecom networks, significantly improving the chances of recovery.

More Digital Safety Features on Sanchar Saathi

Beyond phone recovery, the portal offers several tools to enhance digital security:

  • Connection Check: View all mobile numbers registered under your name to prevent identity misuse
  • Device Verification: Confirm whether a handset is genuine before purchasing
  • Fraud Reporting: Flag suspicious or fake calls, including international numbers posing as local ones

Through initiatives like Sanchar Saathi and Communication Companion, citizens can protect their digital identity and stay secure—even in situations like phone theft during train travel.
