Barmer: Barmer district will be awarded the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Award for its outstanding performance in the field of rainwater harvesting and public participation. This award will be presented by President Draupadi Murmu at the 6th National Water Awards ceremony to be held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on November 18, 2025. Prize Amount and Representative Barmer district will receive this award worth Rs 2 crore. District Collector Tina Dabi will receive this award on behalf of the district. District Collector Tina Dabi stated that large-scale tank construction has been carried out under the "Catch the Rain" campaign to promote rainwater harvesting in the district. This initiative has provided villagers with fresh water for 3-4 months, whereas previously most of the rainwater would have been wasted. Success of the Community-Driven Model Tina Dabi stated that this community-driven model was instrumental in securing the district a national ranking. Under this model, villagers are actively participating in water harvesting and conservation, ensuring the conservation and recharge of local water sources. Rainwater Harvesting Structures and Restoration Under the campaign, rainwater harvesting structures were developed on the rooftops of buildings in Barmer district. Lakes, ponds, and stepwells were also rehabilitated. Under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan, states have been divided into five regions and assigned targets to build at least 10,000 artificial recharge and water storage structures. Action in Urban Areas This work is gaining momentum in urban areas through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Details of National Awards A total of 100 awards have been announced this year under the first Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Samman. These include three states, 67 districts, six municipal corporations, one urban local body, two ministries/departments, two industries, three NGOs, two philanthropic organizations, and 14 nodal officers. The awards were selected based on verified data uploaded to the portal. This initiative in Barmer district is proving to be an inspiring model for rainwater harvesting and public participation, ensuring sustainable water availability for villagers.
