New Delhi: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he had become the country's prime minister with "foreign help" and continued to hold the position with overseas support.

In a post on X, the Congress leader claimed that Modi's financial system was controlled and backed by foreign entities, while international social media platforms provided him with support. Rahul also challenged the Prime Minister to an open debate on the allegations.

Rahul challenges Modi to open debate

"Mr Modi, stop lying to this nation," the Congress leader said.

"You became PM because of foreign help. You remain PM because of foreign help. Your financial system is fully controlled and supported by foreigners. Foreign social media fully backs you," he added.

Rahul further challenged Modi to debate the issue at any venue and at any time, claiming that the Prime Minister would not accept the challenge.

"I challenge you to an open debate about this. Any stage, any time. Come if you have the guts. You won't dare, because you are terrified of what I know about you," he added.

Remarks follow Modi's attack on Opposition

Rahul's remarks came in response to Modi's address on the occasion of Ekta Diwas, during which the Prime Minister accused the Opposition of turning into an "obstructionist force" (avrodh paksh) instead of performing its role as a constructive opposition.

Modi also warned against forces allegedly conspiring to divide the country. He said social media was being used to spread rumours and damage India's image.

"When country was seeking solutions to external challenges, some forces withing the country were also creating instability by spreading lies ans rumours. But the countrymen stood shoulder to shoulder with the nation," the Prime Minister said.

"It is out misfortune that at this time in the country, the opposition has turned into an Avrodh Paksh rather than Virodh Paksh. In their frustration, these peiplle are standing as obstacles in the way of the country's development."
