Protest intensifies in Srinagar over Khamenei’s killing; Police fire tear gas

Srinagar: Protests intensified in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, following the news of the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A large number of people took to the streets near Bemina Degree College on Monday. Police fired tear gas to prevent the protesters from advancing. The administration had already imposed restrictions in all districts for security reasons.

Protests in Several Areas of the Valley

Protests were not limited to Srinagar. People gathered in several locations, including Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag, and Pulwama. Hundreds of people mourned and protested for the second day in Magam town of Budgam. Protesters beat their chests and chanted slogans against the United States and Israel. The situation became tense at some locations, prompting security forces to use force to disperse the crowds.

Mobile Internet Restrictions

In light of the situation, the administration has suspended high-speed mobile internet services across Kashmir as a precautionary measure. Officials say this step was taken to maintain law and order. Internet speeds have been reduced on all service providers in the Valley. The administration says it is necessary to stop the spread of rumors and inflammatory content.

Advisory issued to media

Police have issued an advisory to media organizations and social media users. It states that they should avoid publishing unverified news or rumors and report only after verifying them with official and reliable sources. They have also appealed to avoid sensational news to avoid spreading panic among the public.

Transfers in the Prisons Department

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has made several transfers and appointments in the Prisons Department. Sheikh Zulfiqar Azad, Superintendent of Central Jail Srinagar, has been repatriated to his parent department, the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Saba Shawl has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Central Jail Srinagar. Several other officers have also been reassigned.
