Social activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has ended his silence after being shifted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, calling it an “illegal detention,” and asks supporters to continue Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) “India’s 2nd Freedom Movement” campaign.

The message, delivered on Sunday through his wife Gitanjali J. Angmo, was uploaded a day after the Delhi Police removed Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar, where he had been on a 21-day hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).

How Sonam Wangchuk responded?

In a handwritten note via his official X account, Wangchuk urged supporters to work to make CJP’s planned Parliament march on July 20 a success, calling his stay in the hospital an “illegal detention” and asking people to work to create a “fear-free” and “injustice-free” India.

Highlighting issues including paper leaks that have been a focus of his protest, Wangchuk said the movement is a fight for “freedom from injustice.” He said CJP’s campaign is “India’s 2nd Freedom Movement,” and linked his detention with the struggle for fear and injustice.

Will the CJP's Parliament march take place?

When Sonam Wangchuk urged mass participation, there was no clarity on the march to Parliament. It was pointed out by Delhi Police officials that the CJP had not requested permission for a march till Saturday. With the Monsoon session of the Parliament starting, officers said it was unlikely to grant permission to the march even if an application is submitted.

What is the current condition of Sonam Wangchuk’s health?

Safdarjung Hospital said Sonam Wangchuk is under the required medical care and is under close observation of a multidisciplinary team. Doctors said his vital signs are currently stable, though few parameters in his blood tests are slightly affected due to the physiological effects of the long break.

The hospital earlier said that Wangchuk had declined all drinks and medicines even apart from intravenous fluids or oral rehydration solution despite repeated counselling by doctors and an independent AIIMS expert. He also did not give his consent for any of the recommended treatments.

Delhi Police said the only reason was to seek medical advice and also because it was in compliance with the directions of the Delhi High Court, and the transfer was made since the need arose for the basic medical treatment because of his worsening condition.

Even without the presence of Sonam, CJP protesters are continuing the protest. CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke is observing a hunger strike, after an emotional appeal to protesters.
