New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Police is expanding its role beyond crime prevention and law enforcement, using technology to reach people in emotional distress and prevent suicide. Between January 1, 2023, and October 10, 2026, police teams saved more than 4,000 lives by responding to social media posts indicating suicidal intent.
The initiative operates through a system established between the UP Police and Meta in 2022. Under the arrangement, Meta sends alerts by email and phone to the Social Media Centre at Police Headquarters whenever it detects a suicide-related post on Facebook or Instagram.
Once an alert is received, the Police Headquarters identifies the person's location and informs the local police. Officers then reach the person to assess the situation, ensure their safety and provide emotional support.
Two recent incidents in Lucknow and Ghaziabad illustrate how the system works on the ground. In both cases, young men had posted suicide-related messages on Instagram. Acting on alerts from Meta, the Police Headquarters directed local teams to respond immediately, helping prevent potentially fatal outcomes.
In Lucknow's Saadatganj area, a 26-year-old delivery worker posted a video related to suicide after experiencing mental distress over a dispute with his wife and in-laws. After receiving the alert, the Police Headquarters shared his location with the local police.
Officers from Saadatganj police station reached him within around 10 minutes, amid concerns that he might jump into a river. They ensured his safety, counselled him and involved his family members to help provide continued support.
A similar intervention took place in Ghaziabad's Link Road police station area, where a 24-year-old man posted a suicide-related message on Instagram while struggling with financial difficulties. Following an alert from Meta, the local police reached his home within eight minutes on the directions of the Police Headquarters.
Officers found a noose in the room and secured his safety. During the interaction, the man told police that he was under mental stress because he could not meet his household expenses. The police counselled him and urged him not to take such a step in the future.

The initiative has also received recognition, with the UP Police securing the SKOCH Award 2025 and The Economic Times GovTech Awards 2026 for its work in this area.
The programme highlights how cooperation between social media platforms and law enforcement can help identify people in crisis and enable timely intervention. Alongside rapid response, counselling and family involvement remain important parts of the effort to support those experiencing distress.
