Dehradun: At least two persons went missing amid heavy rains on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday after late-night cloudburst over Sahastradhara in Dehradun triggering flash floods and widespread waterlogging.

Several hotels, shops and bridges have been damaged by the monsoon fury prompting authorities to issue alerts across various parts in the state.

Authorities on high alert

Authorities have urged people to remain alert and avoid visiting low-lying areas as rivers and streams are flowing above danger levels. In view of the situation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert in four districts of Uttarakhand- Dehradun, Champawat, Bageshwar and Nainital.

Multiple rescue operations are underway by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and also from the Public Works Department (PWD). Authorities have closed schools and Anganwadi centres in Dehradun as a precautionary measure.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is monitoring the situation closely and has directed district administrations to remain on high alert. “Rescue teams are working on the ground. People living near rivers and streams are advised to move to safer places,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have also been briefed and assured of all necessary assistance.

"Some shops have been damaged due to heavy rain in Sahastradhara, Dehradun, late last night. District administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am constantly in touch with the local administration in this regard and am personally monitoring the situation," he tweeted on X.

Uttrakhand witnesses extreme devastation

Several houses, shops and vehicles were submerged, while roads and bridges suffered extensive damage. A bridge near Fun Valley collapsed under the pressure of gushing water, and another on the Dehradun–Haridwar highway near Uttarakhand Dental College was partially washed away.

Temples too were affected, water entered the premises of the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, though the inner sanctum was reported safe.
