A sudden cloudburst triggered massive floods in Uttarkashi’s Dharali village, sweeping away homes and leaving over 50 missing. Rescue ops by NDRF, Army underway as PM Modi, CM Dhami monitor relief efforts. Climate vulnerability exposed yet again.
Rescue Team Saves Multiple People
Uttarkashi : Nature wreaked havoc in Dharali village of Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday. After the cloudburst, a sudden massive flood in the mountain stream devastated the entire village.
The debris and water velocity that came down from the mountains was so powerful that many houses were completely swept away or buried under the debris. This accident has shaken not only Dharali village but also the entire Uttarakhand and the country.
Human tragedy: Huge loss of life and property
So far, more than a dozen people have been reported dead in this disaster, although officially only 4-5 deaths have been confirmed. The horror of the situation can be gauged from the fact that more than 50 people are missing, and many are feared to be buried under the debris. The scene around the village is so scary that the local residents are in shock. Many families have lost their homes, land, and animals, completely disrupting their lives.
National level concern: Quick action by central and state government
As soon as the news of this terrible disaster was received, the central and state governments immediately started relief and rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to take stock of the situation and assured full cooperation.
The central government immediately sent NDRF, ITBP, and army teams to the spot. A 150-member army team has so far rescued 15-20 people, while the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital in Harshil.
Relief and rescue operations: Continuing on a war footing
The state administration has taken this disaster seriously and started relief operations on a war footing. Joint teams of the district administration, police, SDRF, and NDRF are constantly engaged in rescuing people trapped in the debris.
Missing people are being searched for with the help of modern equipment like drones and satellite phones. The Chief Minister has also issued a helpline number so that quick assistance can be provided to the affected people.
Dharali Village: Geographical Sensitivity and Challenges
Dharali village is a sensitive area located just 18 km from Gangotri Dham. This area is often a victim of landslides and cloudbursts during monsoon due to its proximity to hilly slopes and riverbanks. This time too, sudden floods hit the village, causing massive destruction. Locals say that such incidents are increasing due to indiscriminate construction on the mountains and climate change.
Message and Future Challenges
This incident has once again highlighted the geographical sensitivity and disaster management deficiencies of Uttarakhand. Although the government and security forces have saved many lives by taking prompt action, a large number of people are still missing.
To deal with such disasters in the future, there is a need for better early warning systems, strong infrastructure, and awareness among local communities. This tragedy has once again reminded the country that man has his limitations in front of nature, and we have to work seriously on environmental protection and sustainable development.
