The WHO website further states, "Manipulating children for profit in business. Every day, the tobacco and nicotine industry adopts different methods to lure new generations of users and retain existing ones."
Use of tobacco in any form including smoking, is a major cause of a large number of diseases like heart attack, stroke and asthma. Besides tobacco also causes deadly mouth and lung cancer.
Therefore the WHO also promotes measures to reduce tobacco consumption worldwide. At the same time it also encourages individuals, communities and governments to take positive measures towards a tobacco-free world.
The Root of Cancer Heart Attack and Stroke: Tobacco is not only a cause of mouth and lung cancer, but is also a major cause of many deadly diseases like heart attack, stroke and asthma. More than 28 crore people in the country use tobacco.
According to experts, people who use tobacco (smoking or chewing) have a manifold increased risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and respiratory diseases. Nicotine in tobacco increases blood pressure abnormally and constricts the blood arteries, due to which the heart and brain do not get enough oxygen.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year 8 million people die from tobacco-related diseases worldwide – many of whom suffer from heart and brain diseases.
Tobacco consumption is one of the main causes of preventable deaths worldwide. Therefore all governments throughout the world try to make their citizens aware of harmful consequences of using tobacco products through various means including advertising.
According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey, there are more than 28 crore tobacco users in India. And more than 18 lakh people lose their lives due to use of tobacco in some form or the other every year. According to an estimate, every day about 6500 new youth start tobacco addiction which comes to more than 24 lakh annually.
Moreover there is the economic loss also due to tobacco use in the country. This loss is estimated to be more than 1.80 lakh crores. This loss is more than the tax received by the government from tobacco.
