Congress support to Vijay
New Delhi: In a landmark development, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has resolved to extend conditional support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the single-largest party in the state assembly with 108 seats.
Under the agreement, Congress is expected to secure two cabinet positions and several board chairmanships. A formal letter of support is anticipated soon, followed by a meeting between Congress MLAs and TVK leader Vijay in Panaiyur to finalize the alliance.
TVK President Thiru Vijay has requested the Indian National Congress' (INC) support to form a government in Tamil Nadu.
The INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government, committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit.

A Congress statement highlighted, “TVK President Thiru Vijay has requested the Indian National Congress for support to form a government in Tamil Nadu. The INC is committed to a secular government that upholds the Constitution and will ensure that neither the BJP nor its affiliates influence governance in the state. The TNCC has been directed to decide on this request, reflecting the mandate of the people.”
TVK’s win ends more than five decades of dominance by the DMK and AIADMK. Though falling short of the 118 seats required for a majority, Vijay’s party won the trust of youth and first-time voters, capturing nearly 68% support in this demographic. Political analysts compare this breakthrough to Assam’s 1985 shift with the rise of the Asom Gana Parishad, signaling a generational change in Tamil Nadu politics.
Top Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, considered the post-election scenario before granting TNCC the autonomy to decide on supporting TVK. KC Venugopal stressed the party’s commitment to secular governance and its decision to exclude any BJP involvement. Vijay’s admiration for former Congress leader K. Kamaraj also played a role, reflecting strong grassroots support for the alliance. This partnership could reshape the dynamics of the INDIA bloc in the state.
Vijay has approached the governor to stake his claim to form the government. He may need to prove his majority on the assembly floor or submit letters of support. TVK is in discussions with smaller parties from the DMK alliance, including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, whose combined 14 seats could ensure a majority. Reports indicate that Vijay is likely to take oath as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister on May 7, marking a historic political transition.
