EVM dispatch begins under tight security as West Bengal prepares for first phase of assembly polls

Kolkata: Election authorities on Wednesday began dispatching Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from distribution centres in Berhampore, marking the final stage of preparations for the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 scheduled for April 23.

At the YMA ground distribution centre, officials and polling personnel were seen completing formalities and collecting materials required for voting day. The process is being conducted under tight security to ensure safe transportation of EVMs to designated polling booths.

Officials Highlight Smooth Arrangements

Polling staff deployed at the centre expressed confidence in the preparedness of election authorities. Presiding officer Roshni Roy stated that all required materials had been received and arrangements were functioning efficiently.

She noted that while the process appears stricter this time, it has not caused any disruption. Officials emphasised that the focus remains on ensuring a smooth and transparent voting process.

Enhanced Security Presence Across Centres

Security has been significantly strengthened for this phase of polling. Personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed in large numbers at distribution centres and along transit routes.

Polling officer Begum Meri, who is on election duty for the second time, observed that the security arrangements feel more robust compared to previous elections. Authorities say the heightened measures are aimed at maintaining law and order and boosting voter confidence.

Campaigning Concludes Amid Intense Political Contest

Campaigning for the first phase concluded on Tuesday, setting the stage for voting across 152 constituencies. A total of 1,478 candidates are in the fray, making it a closely watched electoral contest.

The campaign witnessed sharp exchanges between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. While the BJP focused on issues such as law and order and alleged voter intimidation, the Trinamool Congress countered by framing the narrative around regional identity.

Key Candidates and Leaders in Focus

Prominent leaders contesting in this phase include Mamata BanerjeeSuvendu Adhikari, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Other notable candidates from major parties are also vying for crucial seats across the state.

Senior leaders including Narendra ModiAmit Shah, and Rahul Gandhi addressed multiple rallies to energise party workers and voters ahead of polling.
