New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has implemented stringent regulations in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections. Effective April 21, various restrictions have been imposed on two-wheelers to ensure that voting is conducted in a peaceful and impartial manner.

Complete Ban on Bikes and Rallies

The Election Commission has explicitly stated that bike rallies will be completely prohibited. Furthermore, riding motorcycles between 6 PM and 6 AM has been banned. This measure has been taken to prevent potential tensions and disturbances.

During the daytime—specifically from 6 AM to 6 PM—carrying a second person (pillion riding) on a bike will also be prohibited. However, certain exemptions have been granted for families traveling together to vote or for essential tasks.

In Which Cases Are Exemptions Granted?

Relaxations to the rules have been provided under specific circumstances:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Voting with family members
  • Transporting children to and from school

However, whenever necessary, it will be mandatory to obtain written permission from the local police for these purposes.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer, all these measures have been adopted to ensure that the elections are conducted in a completely fair, peaceful, and fearless environment. These regulations came into effect immediately upon the conclusion of the election campaign and will remain in force until the voting concludes

On April 23, voting for the first phase will be held across 152 seats spanning 16 districts. This includes several districts located in North Bengal, South Bengal, and the Junglemahal region.

How Many Candidates and Voters?

  • Total Candidates: 1,478
  • Total Voters: Over 3.60 Crores
  • Male Voters: 1.84 Crores
  • Female Voters: 1.75 Crores
  • Transgender Voters: 465

This decision by the Election Commission clearly demonstrates that the administration is taking a strict stance against any form of malpractice or disturbance this time around. Through the bike ban and rigorous surveillance, efforts are being made to ensure that the electoral process remains both secure and transparent.
