Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is witnessing growing internal dissent following its significant defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Senior leaders have begun raising concerns over the party’s internal structure and decision-making, signalling unrest within the ranks.

Jawhar Sircar Flags Corruption, Internal Issues

Former Rajya Sabha MP and retired IAS officer Jawhar Sircar has openly criticised the party, stating that it has been “taken over by corrupt people.” He suggested that internal weaknesses, rather than external forces alone, played a crucial role in the electoral setback.

Speaking to PTI, Sircar referred to his earlier resignation letter, which had gained widespread attention. In that letter, he had highlighted issues such as corruption and misuse of power within the party. He reiterated that these concerns were dismissed at the time but have now become harder to ignore in the wake of the defeat.

Questions Over Leadership and Party Structure

Sircar also pointed to the concentration of influence among certain individuals within the party, suggesting that some leaders wield disproportionate power despite limited contributions. His remarks underline deeper structural challenges within the organisation that may have impacted its performance.

BJP’s Rise and Political Shifts

Offering a broader political perspective, Sircar said that historical alliances and shifting loyalties helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gradually expand its footprint in West Bengal. He noted that over time, the BJP emerged as a viable alternative for leaders and supporters seeking political space outside the TMC.

Mamata Banerjee Rejects Claims

TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has rejected allegations regarding internal failures, maintaining that the election outcome was influenced by external factors. She has consistently claimed that the party’s defeat was “engineered” and not a reflection of public sentiment.

The BJP’s sweeping victory, securing over 200 seats in the 294-member assembly, has ended TMC’s 15-year rule in the state. With the party reduced to around 80 seats, the current moment marks a critical phase for introspection and potential restructuring within the TMC.
