Mumbai: This state capital witnessed a high-profile political gathering on Sunday as Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray appeared together to lead the Virat Garjana Morcha against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest focused on alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, with demonstrators demanding the cancellation of the Maharashtra SIR exercise and the removal or resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The joint appearance of the Thackeray cousins became one of the biggest talking points of the protest. Their parties had organised the march as a wider public mobilisation rather than a conventional party rally, with participants asked to carry the national tricolour instead of party flags.

The Virat Garjana Morcha began in south Mumbai and moved towards the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. Congress and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) leaders and workers also participated, giving the demonstration a wider opposition presence.

The participation of multiple opposition parties increased the political significance of the protest. The central issue remained the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and allegations that the process could affect voters' names and electoral participation.

The allegations are political claims and have not been independently established. The Election Commission's electoral-roll revision process operates under the applicable legal and administrative framework.

## Why Is SIR At The Centre Of The Protest?

The Special Intensive Revision, commonly known as SIR, involves a detailed review and updating of electoral rolls. The exercise has emerged as a major political flashpoint, with opposition parties raising concerns about voter-list changes and possible exclusion of eligible voters.

In Maharashtra, the Thackeray-led protest has turned the issue into a larger debate over electoral transparency, voter rights and the functioning of the Election Commission.

The protesters are demanding that the Maharashtra SIR exercise be cancelled and have also targeted CEC Gyanesh Kumar with demands for his resignation or removal.

## Raj Thackeray Pushes For SIR Cancellation And Ballot Papers

Raj Thackeray made two major demands during the protest: cancellation of the SIR exercise in Maharashtra and a return to ballot-paper voting.

His position has linked the SIR controversy with the broader debate over electronic voting machines, electoral transparency and public confidence in the voting process.

The demand is part of the political campaign being led by opposition parties and does not by itself establish any irregularity in the functioning of electronic voting systems or the electoral-roll process.

## Uddhav Thackeray Raises Voter List Concerns

Uddhav Thackeray also used the protest to raise allegations about large-scale deletions from electoral rolls.

He linked the Maharashtra issue with voter-list disputes in other parts of the country and argued that the changes require greater public and political scrutiny.

The claims about the scale and impact of voter deletions remain contested. Any determination about individual voters or the accuracy of electoral rolls would depend on official records, the revision process and relevant legal proceedings.

## Why No Party Flags Were Allowed

One of the most visible features of the Mumbai protest was the decision to keep party flags away from the march.

Organisers asked participants to carry only the national tricolour. The move was aimed at projecting the Virat Garjana Morcha as a broader public mobilisation rather than a rally restricted to Shiv Sena (UBT) or MNS supporters.

The visual of supporters marching with the tricolour instead of party symbols also gave the demonstration a distinct identity and became an important talking point around the event.

## Congress, NCP (SP) Join The Mumbai March

The protest gained a wider opposition character with participation from Congress and NCP (SP) leaders and workers.

The organisers had invited opposition parties to join the October 4 mobilisation, and the presence of the two parties added to the political weight of the march.

The joint mobilisation has also brought renewed attention to the political relationship between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, whose appearance together remains a significant development in Maharashtra politics.

## Protest Comes After CJP's Mumbai Agitation

The Thackeray-led demonstration came just two days after the Cockroach Janta Party held a Jail Bharo Andolan at Mumbai's Shivaji Park over the same broad issue of the Election Commission and Gyanesh Kumar.

The CJP has also campaigned against alleged manipulation of voter rolls and demanded the resignation of the CEC. Its October 2 protest was part of a wider series of demonstrations linked to the SIR controversy.

The back-to-back protests indicate that the electoral-roll revision issue is continuing to generate political mobilisation beyond a single party or organisation.

## A Rare Joint Appearance By The Thackeray Cousins

Beyond the immediate issue of SIR, the Mumbai march carries political significance because Uddhav and Raj Thackeray appeared together on the same protest platform.

The two leaders heading separate political organisations makes their joint mobilisation particularly notable. Their appearance has generated considerable attention in Maharashtra because the protest brought the cousins together around a common issue involving the Election Commission and electoral rolls.

For supporters, the joint march provides a common platform to raise concerns over the electoral process. For political observers, it adds another layer to the evolving opposition politics in Maharashtra.

For voters, the central question remains the accuracy and accessibility of electoral rolls. Any specific allegation of wrongful deletion or irregularity will ultimately require verification through official records and the appropriate legal or administrative process.
