New Delhi: The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata. She is the fifth form of Goddess Durga. Religious belief holds that worshipping Goddess Skandamata bestows the happiness of children, frees one from negative energies, and destroys obstacles in life.

According to mythology, a demon named Tarakasura received the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma. However, Brahma declared that his end would only come at the hands of Lord Shiva's son. Tarakasura then spread fear. On the advice of the gods, Goddess Parvati assumed the form of Skandamata and taught her son Kartikeya the art of warfare. Kartikeya then killed Tarakasura.
