Shocking mass cull in Telangana! Around 100 stray dogs poisoned in Yacharam village, days after 500 were killed across the state. Authorities probe a possible link to election promises- what’s fueling this brutal spree?

Nearly 100 stray dogs ‘poisoned’ in Telangana
Hyderabad: In a disturbing development, Yacharam village near Hyderabad has witnessed the alleged poisoning of around 100 stray dogs, adding to a wave of mass killings across Telangana. Police have registered a case against the village sarpanch, panchayat secretary, and a ward member, who are suspected of orchestrating the gruesome act.
An animal welfare activist from the Stray Animal Foundation of India filed a formal complaint, reporting that stray dogs were injected with poisonous substances on January 19.

Acting on this complaint, Yacharam Police booked the accused under sections of the Bombay Police Act (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. While the complaint cites roughly 100 deaths, preliminary investigations confirm at least 50, with authorities warning that numbers may rise as searches for carcasses continue.
This incident is the latest in a series of mass killings of stray dogs across Telangana. Since January 6, nearly 500 stray dogs have reportedly been killed in multiple districts. In Hanamkonda, police booked nine people including two women sarpanches and their husbands for allegedly eliminating around 300 dogs in Shayampet and Arepally villages.
Similarly, in Kamareddy district, approximately 200 stray dogs were reportedly killed, prompting police to register cases against six individuals, including five village sarpanches.
Investigators suggest that the mass killings may have been carried out to fulfill promises made by elected representatives during the gram panchayat elections held in December. Officials suspect that the acts were carried out under the guise of controlling the stray dog population, though the methods have sparked outrage from animal rights groups and the public alike.

Authorities continue to probe the Yacharam incident, collecting evidence and searching for the bodies of the poisoned dogs. Animal welfare organizations have condemned the killings, calling for stricter enforcement of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and measures to ensure accountability for those responsible.
As the investigation unfolds, the spate of killings in Telangana has raised serious questions about the ethics of political promises and the treatment of stray animals, highlighting the urgent need for humane solutions to manage animal populations.
