Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has questioned the extensive security arrangements planned for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination, arguing that the measures could increase anxiety among students who have spent months preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance test.

The NEET UG 2026 retest is scheduled to be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 21 from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Annamalai Criticises Scale of Security Arrangements

In a post on X, Annamalai said the government's efforts to prevent paper leaks and examination malpractice were understandable, but the scale of security measures appeared excessive for a student entrance examination.

Highlighting the arrangements reportedly planned for the retest, he referred to CRPF and CISF escorts, Indian Air Force airlift support, AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, biometric and facial recognition checks, multiple layers of frisking and direct monitoring mechanisms.

"Two-tier CRPF+CISF escort with IAF airlift. 4-layer CCTV with AI surveillance. Biometric & facial recognition before entry. Multiple layers of frisking. Multi-level oversight with direct monitoring from the Prime Minister's Office. Yes, you read it right," Annamalai wrote.

'Students Need Fair Exams, Not More Anxiety'

According to the BJP leader, students would support stronger safeguards aimed at preventing paper leaks and ensuring a fair examination process.

However, he argued that prolonged frisking, multiple verification procedures and stricter entry checks could add unnecessary pressure on candidates before the examination begins.

Annamalai said students preparing for one of India's toughest entrance exams should not have to face additional stress because of extensive security arrangements.

Concerns Over Extended Examination Duration

The former Tamil Nadu BJP chief also raised concerns over the reported extension of the examination duration from 180 minutes to 195 minutes.

He said such changes, combined with heightened security protocols, could contribute to increased mental pressure on candidates appearing for the re-examination.

Cites NEP 2020's Goal of Reducing Exam Stress

Referring to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Annamalai said the government may have overlooked the policy's objective of reducing examination-related stress among students.

"While the government has taken measures to contain leaks, they have forgotten the additional burden they have imposed on a student before they take up an assessment, one that they have spent months preparing for, dissolving the entire purpose of our exam system and the NEP 2020's goal to reduce exam stress," he said.

Retest Amid Focus on Exam Integrity

The remarks come as authorities prepare for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination amid heightened concerns over examination integrity and paper leak allegations.

Officials have maintained that enhanced security measures are aimed at ensuring a transparent and malpractice-free examination process.
