Mumbai: Ahead of the start of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League, a crucial meeting of the captains of all 10 teams was held in Mumbai. The 'Impact Player' rule and new guidelines were discussed in detail at the meeting. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to continue this rule until 2027, several captains expressed serious objections.

Concerns over future of all-rounders

During the meeting, the captains stated that the 'Impact Player' rule is diminishing the importance of all-rounders. Axar Patel and Rohit Sharma have already criticized this rule. They believe that teams are now prioritizing specialist batsmen or bowlers, which is impacting the development of all-rounders.

Hardik Pandya and Glenn Phillips also expressed concern that this rule could have a negative impact on international cricket.

BCCI's clear stance

Despite the captains' objections, the BCCI has made it clear that no changes will be made to this rule for now. According to the board, the 'Impact Player' rule will now be reviewed only after the 2027 season. The board argues that this rule makes matches more exciting and high-scoring, thereby increasing spectator interest.

Ball Change Proposal Not Approved

At the meeting, one captain suggested that the ball should be changed after 10 overs in the first innings, as is done in the second innings due to dew. However, this proposal did not receive much support and was rejected. Officials stated that the impact of dew is less in the first innings, so the existing rules will remain in place.

Questions on New Practice Guidelines

Captains also raised questions about the new training guidelines issued for the 2026 season. Ishan Kishan (for Sunrisers Hyderabad) sought clarity on these rules. According to the new guidelines, there will be no practice sessions on match days, and one team will not be able to use the same pitch after the other has finished practice.

What's Next?

Overall, the meeting discussed several important issues, but the "Impact Player" rule will remain unchanged for now. The captains expressed hope that this rule will be reviewed in the future and a balance will be struck to ensure both the fundamentals of the game and player development are protected.
