Commonwealth Games 2026: India wins six medals on Day 5, tally climbs to 10

India's medal tally rose to 10 after a six-medal Day 5 at the Commonwealth Games 2026, highlighted by historic performances in athletics, para athletics and another dominant showing in weightlifting.

Glasgow: The performance of India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 was at its peak with six medals won on Day 5, taking their total medal tally to 10. Weightlifting, Athletics and Para Athletics were the main sources of medals for India, whereas Indian boxers improved the medal chances of their nation by reaching the quarterfinals.

Significant achievements in athletics

Sarvesh Kushare made history by becoming the first ever to win a Commonwealth Games silver medal in the men's high jump after clearing 2.25m. Para Athlete Sharmila Dhankar also made history in her field as she became the first-ever Indian Para Athlete to have won a Commonwealth Games gold in the field of Para athletics with her season's best throw of 9.81m in the women's F57 shot put event.

Weightlifting continues to make its mark

India continued to receive medals through weightlifting. Valluri Ajaya Babu won a silver medal for India in the men's 79kg category by lifting a total of 330kg, whereas Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver in the women's 53kg category. Bindyarani Devi added to the medal tally by winning a bronze medal in the women's 58kg category.

Boxing and athletics carry on the hopes

Sachin Siwach, Ankush and Sakshi Chaudhary progressed into the quarterfinals of boxing convincingly, whereas Sumit went out of the tournament after being narrowly beaten. M Sreeshankar and Lokesh Sathyanathan qualified for the men's long jump final and Tejas Shirse became the first Indian to qualify for the Commonwealth Games men's 110m hurdles final, finishing eighth place owing to his injury.

Swimming saw mixed results with Sajan Prakash and Aryan Nehra finishing eighth in their respective finals, whereas gymnast Protistha Samanta took seventh place in the women's vault final.

  • Men's Long Jump Qualification: Lokesh Sathyanathan qualified with 7.77m.
  • Men's 110m Hurdles Final: Tejas Shirse finished eighth (15.39s) after becoming the first Indian to qualify for the event final.
  • Men's High Jump: Sarvesh Kushare won silver with 2.25m.
  • Men's High Jump: Adarsh Ram finished fifth (2.15m).
  • Men's High Jump: Tejaswin Shankar retired after failing to clear 2.05m.

Para Athletics

  • Women's Shot Put F57: Sharmila Dhankar won gold (9.81m).
  • Women's Shot Put F57: Shilpa Shyla won bronze after an upgraded result.
  • Men's T38 100m Final: Rakeshbhai Bhatt finished fifth (11.82s).
  • Men's T38 100m Final: Shreyansh Trivedi finished sixth (12.22s).

Weightlifting

  • Women's 53kg: Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver (199kg; 88kg snatch, 111kg clean & jerk).
  • Women's 58kg: Bindyarani Devi won bronze (199kg; 87kg snatch, 112kg clean & jerk).
  • Men's 79kg: Valluri Ajaya Babu won silver (330kg; 149kg snatch, 181kg clean & jerk).

Boxing

  • Men's 60kg: Sachin Siwach beat William Hewitt (England) 4-1 to reach the quarterfinals.
  • Men's 80kg: Ankush defeated Jan Zalaan (Antigua and Barbuda) 5-0 to enter the quarterfinals.
  • Women's 51kg: Sakshi Chaudhary beat Lethabo Modukanele (Botswana) 5-0 to progress.
  • Men's 70kg: Sumit lost 1-4 to Jon McConnell (Northern Ireland) and exited.

Swimming

  • Men's 200m Butterfly: Sajan Prakash finished eighth (1:58.05).
  • Men's 800m Freestyle: Aryan Nehra finished eighth (8:07.26).

Para Swimming

  • Men's 100m Breaststroke SB9: Swatik Patil finished fifth (1:15.82).

Artistic Gymnastics

  • Women's Vault Final: Protistha Samanta finished seventh.

Lawn Bowls

  • Men's Singles: Putul Sonowal finished fifth in Section D and missed the semifinals.

3x3 Basketball

  • Wheelchair Women's Pool B: India lost 6-7 to Nigeria, ending the campaign with one win and four defeats.
