New Delhi: Former England captain Nasser Hussain has predicted that Australia, England, India and New Zealand will reach the semifinals of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, set to begin on June 12 in the United Kingdom.

The tournament will open with England taking on Sri Lanka in Birmingham, while India start their campaign against Pakistan on June 14 at the same venue.

Why India Made the Cut

While assessing the leading contenders, Hussain placed India ahead of South Africa for a semifinal berth. He pointed to India’s ability to deliver under pressure and perform strongly in major tournaments.

According to Hussain, India’s recent success in high-stakes matches demonstrates a capacity to raise their level when it matters most. He suggested that knockout games often bring out the best in the side, making them a strong candidate for another deep tournament run.

West Indies Named as Potential Surprise Package

Despite selecting New Zealand as one of his top four teams, Hussain believes the West Indies could emerge as the tournament’s dark horse.

The former England skipper highlighted the experience and match-winning ability of players such as Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin, along with the growing exposure many West Indies cricketers have gained through franchise competitions around the world.

He also noted that the Caribbean side has a history of performing well on the global stage and should not be underestimated.

Mooney Backed for Run-Scoring Honours

Hussain tipped Australia opener Beth Mooney to finish as the tournament’s highest run-scorer. He cited her consistency, experience in English conditions and Australia’s strong chances of progressing deep into the competition.

Mooney is already Australia’s leading run-scorer in women’s T20 internationals and holds the record for the most runs scored in a single Women’s T20 World Cup edition.

Bell and Sutherland Receive Special Praise

For the leading wicket-taker award, Hussain chose England fast bowler Lauren Bell, praising her new-ball swing and effectiveness in the death overs.

He also identified Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland as a potential Player of the Tournament, backing her to thrive under pressure and make a significant impact throughout the competition.
