IPL 2026 Updates (PBKS vs CSK): Mhatre and Dube Power Chennai to Massive 209 Against Punjab Kings

Youngster Ayush Mhatre’s sensational 73 and Sarfaraz Khan’s explosive 12-ball 32 powered Chennai Super Kings to a massive 209/5 against Punjab Kings at Chepauk. Despite a middle-over wobble, Shivam Dube’s late unbeaten 45 ensured a formidable total for the hosts.

Chennai: The MA Chidambaram Stadium witnessed a breathtaking display of modern T20 batting as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted a formidable 209/5 in their 20 overs against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday night. On a night that celebrated both youthful exuberance and seasoned power, 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre and finisher Shivam Dube stole the show.

Mhatre’s Historic Blitz

After being put into bat, CSK lost Sanju Samson early, but that only set the stage for Ayush Mhatre. The teenager played an innings for the ages, smashing 73 off just 43 deliveries. His knock, laced with six boundaries and five towering sixes, dismantled the PBKS powerplay strategy.

Alongside skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (28), Mhatre ensured the scoreboard kept ticking at a blistering pace, reaching his half-century with a maturity that belied his age.

The PBKS Fightback

The Punjab Kings managed to claw their way back into the contest during the middle overs. Yuzvendra Chahal broke the opening stand by dismissing Gaikwad, and Vijaykumar Vyshak (2/38) delivered the crucial breakthrough by removing Mhatre just as he looked set for a century.

A successful DRS review by Marco Jansen soon after sent Kartik Sharma back to the pavilion, leaving CSK at 130/4 and threatening to derail their momentum.

Sarfaraz and Dube's Finishing Act

Any hopes PBKS had of restricting Chennai to a sub-200 total were quickly extinguished by Sarfaraz Khan. Coming in at a high-pressure moment, Sarfaraz played a whirlwind cameo of 32 runs from a mere 12 balls, striking at a staggering rate of 266.67.

His innovative "behind the wicket" ramps forced PBKS to scramble their field placements. Once Sarfaraz departed, Shivam Dube took over the mantle. After a relatively quiet start, Dube exploded in the final three overs. He finished unbeaten on 45 off 28 balls, punishing Arshdeep Singh in the 20th over with a flurry of boundaries to ensure CSK crossed the 200-run mark with ease.

Bowling Struggles

It was a tough night at the office for the Punjab pace battery. While Vyshak was the pick of the bowlers, Arshdeep Singh (0/41) and Xavier Bartlett (1/48) struggled to find their lengths under the lights at Chepauk. With a target of 210 set, the PBKS batters face a monumental task against a disciplined CSK bowling attack on a surface that traditionally aids spinners as the game progresses.
