New Delhi: Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found himself at the centre of online criticism after attending a FIFA World Cup 2026 match involving the United States, instead of watching Canada’s tournament opener.
His presence at the USA versus Paraguay fixture in Los Angeles drew attention after he was seen in the stands alongside pop star Katy Perry, his partner. The appearance quickly went viral, triggering questions from Canadian fans about his absence from their national team’s first match.
Canada played their opening match of the tournament on the same day as the USA clash. While Canada secured a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, many supporters expressed disappointment that Trudeau was not present at the game.
The timing of his appearance in Los Angeles intensified criticism, with some questioning his priorities during a major international tournament involving Canada.
Responding to the backlash, Trudeau said his attendance at the USA match was personal and not political. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated that he was fulfilling “supportive boyfriend duties” while accompanying Katy Perry, who also performed at the tournament’s opening ceremony.
Despite the controversy, he emphasized that his support remains with the Canadian team for the remainder of the competition.
Katy Perry’s presence at the stadium added further attention to the couple, as she had performed at the opening ceremony ahead of the USA’s 4-1 win over Paraguay. Cameras frequently captured the pair reacting to key moments during the match.
At halftime, the USA led 3-0 after two goals from striker Folarin Balogun and an own goal by Paraguay, highlighting a dominant performance by the co-host nation.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, featuring 48 teams, began earlier this month with Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match. Canada is scheduled to face Qatar in its next fixture, while the USA will take on Australia in their upcoming group game.
