New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to appoint Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, replacing Suryakumar Yadav.
The reported move is being viewed as part of India’s long-term preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next ICC T20 World Cup scheduled in Australia and New Zealand.
According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav may not even feature in the squad after a mixed T20 World Cup campaign and a disappointing IPL season.

Shreyas Iyer’s elevation reportedly comes after back-to-back impressive IPL seasons both as a batter and captain. The 31-year-old led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and has previously captained teams like Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to finals.
Iyer also delivered strong performances with the bat, scoring 604 runs in IPL 2025 followed by 498 runs in IPL 2026, strengthening his case for leadership responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav’s form reportedly came under scrutiny after he managed 242 runs in nine innings during the T20 World Cup and later scored 270 runs in 13 IPL innings.
Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is also expected to receive his maiden India call-up following a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign.
If selected, the 15-year-old could become the youngest player named in India’s men’s squad since Sachin Tendulkar.

Sooryavanshi enjoyed a remarkable IPL season, scoring 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30. He finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer and also won multiple awards, including Most Sixes, Highest Strike Rate and MVP of IPL 2026.
Before joining the senior side, the Bihar-born youngster is scheduled to represent India A in a tri-series in Sri Lanka involving Afghanistan from June 9 to 21.
However, his immediate place in the playing XI remains uncertain due to competition from established T20 stars like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. Selectors are expected to finalise the squad before the team regroups for the Ireland tour.
