New Delhi: Spain etched their name into FIFA World Cup history after defeating Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16, registering a record sixth consecutive clean sheet in World Cup matches. The victory also saw goalkeeper Unai Simón extend his remarkable scoreless streak to 609 minutes, the longest in tournament history.
With the win over Portugal, Spain surpassed the previous record of five consecutive World Cup clean sheets jointly held by Italy (1990) and Switzerland (2006–10).
Spain's run began after a 2-1 defeat to Japan during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Since then, the team has not conceded a goal in six successive World Cup matches, highlighting its defensive consistency under head coach Luis de la Fuente.
Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón continued his impressive run by extending his shutout streak to 609 minutes, breaking the previous World Cup record of 517 minutes set by Italy's Walter Zenga in 1990.
Although Spain's defence has largely shielded him throughout the tournament, Simón played a crucial role against Portugal, producing key saves to preserve the lead.
The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper denied Cristiano Ronaldo twice in the first half before making a spectacular stop to keep out João Félix's deflected header. Simón reacted quickly to claw the looping effort away from goal, ensuring Spain maintained its clean-sheet record.
With six consecutive shutouts, Spain advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, where they will face either the United States or Belgium.
Having combined disciplined defending with efficient attacking displays, Spain will look to continue its unbeaten defensive run as it chases another World Cup title.
