New Delhi: The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has risen to 3,535, with thousands of people injured, according to the latest reports.

National Assembly President Jorge said that the latest official tally showed 16,740 people injured and 17,854 left without housing. At least 12,800 people were staying in 80 shelters across Caracas and La Guaira, the coastal regions most directly impacted by the earthquake.

He also mentioned that rescue and relief teams remain on the ground, while the government is continuing efforts to provide emergency shelter, food, medical assistance, and other essential supplies to affected communities.

The number of people rescued remained at 6,462, while 86,794 families had received assistance, he said.

On June 24 Earth, which measured magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck within seconds of each other in and around Caracas and La Guairá.

Emergency responders and international rescue teams have been working around the clock to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble. However, as hopes of finding more survivors fade, authorities have begun shifting their focus toward recovery, debris clearance, and rehabilitation. Temporary shelters have been set up for thousands of displaced families who lost their homes in the disaster.

Health officials and humanitarian agencies have warned of an increased risk of disease outbreaks in overcrowded relief camps, citing poor sanitation, limited access to clean drinking water, and strained healthcare facilities. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations are assisting local authorities with medical aid, emergency supplies, and recovery efforts.

The government's handling of the disaster has come under growing criticism, with many residents alleging delays in rescue operations and inadequate relief measures. Despite these concerns, authorities say reconstruction efforts are being accelerated while international humanitarian assistance continues to reach the affected areas.
