New Delhi: Google has officially started rolling out Android 17, the latest version of its mobile operating system, with Pixel devices receiving the update first. Other smartphone manufacturers are expected to follow in the coming months as the company expands availability across the Android ecosystem.

The update introduces several new features focused on productivity, content creation, gaming and security, while also laying the groundwork for a broader wave of artificial intelligence capabilities expected later this year.

Pixel Users First To Receive Update

As with previous Android releases, Google's Pixel smartphones are the first to receive Android 17. The rollout is expected to gradually expand to devices from Samsung and other Android manufacturers over the coming months.

While the current release includes a range of upgrades, some highly anticipated AI-powered tools will arrive separately through future updates.

New Multitasking Features Take Center Stage

One of the most notable additions is a feature called Bubbles, which allows apps to remain active in floating windows that can be moved around the screen and grouped together. The feature is designed to improve multitasking, particularly on foldable devices and larger displays.

Google has also introduced a redesigned split-screen interface, making it easier for users to work across multiple apps simultaneously.

AI And Social Media Tools On The Way

Several Gemini-powered features are expected to debut later this year. These include Gemini Intelligence, smarter voice dictation, redesigned emoji and AI-assisted widgets.

Android 17 also introduces Screen Reactions, a tool that enables users to record video overlays while interacting with content on their phones, a feature aimed at social media creators and content sharing.

Security And Accessibility Improvements

The latest update includes additional privacy protections such as one-time location permissions, expanded approximate-location controls and stronger Lost Mode safeguards that require biometric verification alongside a PIN.

Google has also enhanced accessibility with improved hearing-aid controls and app-specific dark mode settings.

Wear OS Gets An Upgrade Too

Beyond smartphones, Google is rolling out updates for Wear OS, including better battery efficiency, live activity updates and improved compatibility with connected devices. Additional Gemini-powered features for Wear OS are expected later this summer as Google continues its push into AI-driven experiences.
