New Delhi: WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new privacy-focused feature called “Spoiler Messages” that could allow users to hide sensitive text and media captions behind a blur before sending them. The feature is currently being tested in beta versions of the app and is expected to roll out to users in the coming months.
The upcoming feature aims to offer users greater control over private conversations by preventing messages from being instantly visible on screen. Recipients would need to tap on the blurred message to reveal its content.

According to reports, users will be able to manually mark selected messages as spoilers before sending them. The process is expected to be simple and similar to existing text formatting options on WhatsApp.

Once enabled, the message content will appear blurred until the recipient taps on it.
The feature is currently said to support text messages and media captions.
The Spoiler Messages feature is expected to be particularly useful for sharing confidential or sensitive information in chats and group conversations.

The feature could also help prevent accidental exposure of sensitive information when people are using their phones in public places or crowded environments.

Reports suggest that WhatsApp may later expand spoiler support to photos and videos as well. If introduced, users could send blurred media files that remain hidden until the receiver chooses to open them. Such an addition would further strengthen the app’s growing focus on privacy and user-controlled sharing.
Over the past few years, WhatsApp has added several privacy-focused tools including end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, chat locks, screenshot blocking for “view once” media and hidden chats.
The Spoiler Messages feature is expected to become another layer of protection for users who prefer more control over how their conversations are viewed.
Although WhatsApp has not officially announced a release date, reports indicate that beta testing may begin soon before a wider public rollout.
