17 States Face Heavy Rain Threat, IMD Issues Major Weather Alert (Img: Pinterest)
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high-risk weather alert for several parts of the country on September 5, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across 17 states. The weather department said two major weather systems have become active simultaneously, increasing the possibility of extreme weather conditions in the coming hours.
According to IMD, a strong trough line extending from south Gujarat to Jharkhand and a low-pressure cyclonic circulation developing from interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar are influencing weather patterns across the country. The interaction between these systems is expected to intensify rainfall activity in several regions.
The IMD has advised authorities in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Assam, Meghalaya and Kerala to remain alert.
Several areas may witness heavy showers accompanied by strong winds moving at speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, while some locations could experience gusty winds reaching up to 75 kmph.
In Delhi-NCR, cloudy skies and moderate to heavy rainfall are expected, along with strong winds during the day.
In Uttar Pradesh, districts including Meerut, Agra, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur and Lucknow are likely to witness heavy showers, with yellow alerts issued in several areas.
Parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, including Barmer, Bikaner and Jaipur, may also experience thunderstorms and intense rainfall.
The weather department has warned of heavy rainfall and lightning threats in several districts of Bihar, including Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya and Bhagalpur.
In Jharkhand, cities such as Ranchi, Giridih and Bokaro are expected to receive heavy showers, with a risk of thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
The IMD has issued a caution for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir, where heavy rainfall, hailstorms and landslide risks are expected in some areas.
Tourists and travellers heading towards mountainous regions have been advised to avoid unnecessary journeys due to the possibility of sudden landslides and rising river levels.
The weather department has urged farmers to take precautions during thunderstorms and avoid standing in open fields, under trees or near electric poles during lightning activity.
Authorities have advised people to closely follow weather updates and remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall and stormy conditions.
