Chief Justice Surya Kant Emphasizes Mental Wellness
New Delhi: Chief Justice Surya Kant on Saturday expressed concern over the increasing stress and long working hours of judges. He stated that the judiciary's work is as demanding as it is mentally demanding. Sitting in court for long periods of time, hearing cases, and constantly considering complex legal issues impacts judges' physical and mental health. Therefore, it is crucial for them to incorporate recreational activities into their daily routine.
The CJI categorically stated that judges should not only relax but actively participate in activities that refresh the mind and body. These could include sports, yoga, meditation, swimming, brisk walking, or any other fitness activity. According to him, this not only helps reduce stress but also enhances efficiency.
Speaking to the media at the inaugural ceremony of the All India Judges Badminton Championship held at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in Delhi, CJI Surya Kant said, “Judges work long hours and face immense work pressure. Therefore, all judges should engage in recreational activities according to their age and convenience. This is the best way to recharge themselves amid the busy schedule.”
He explained that maintaining mental balance is crucial given the intense workload in courts. Any active activity not only reduces stress but also enhances judges' mental clarity and decision-making.
Justice Surya Kant also noted that a large number of judges from both the High Court and lower courts are participating in this badminton championship, which clearly demonstrates that members of the judiciary are becoming more health conscious. He stated that such sporting events enhance mutual cooperation among judges and promote a healthy environment.
This two-day event is being held at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in Delhi. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju were also present at the event. Former Chief Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath will preside over the closing ceremony and prize distribution of the championship.
The CJI said that judges should choose any activity that they enjoy and that keeps both their body and mind active. In addition to sports, yoga and meditation also provide mental peace. He also pointed out that a healthy lifestyle strengthens efficiency and decision-making, which are essential for the judiciary.
