Supreme Court Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant denied anticipatory bail to BJP MLA from Karnataka, B. Basvaraj, in a murder case. In fact, Justice Surya Kant suggested that the BJP MLA face the trial courageously. Even well-known senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi’s arguments did not help the BJP MLA.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today refused to entertain the anticipatory bail plea filed by BJP MLA from Karnataka, B. Basvaraj, in connection with the Biklu Shiva murder case. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi suggested that the legislator move a plea for regular bail instead.
Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that the legislator Basvaraj should show the courage to face the trial. Justice Bagchi said, “We would have granted you anticipatory bail, but you have taken an evasive stand that you do not know him (a prime accused in the case) at all.”
It may be recalled that BJP legislator Basvaraj is among those accused in the murder case on allegations that he was in touch with the prime accused, a rowdy named Jagdish, who is alleged to have met Biklu Shiva several times before his death.
On February 10, the Karnataka High Court rejected Basvaraj’s anticipatory bail plea in the matter. Facing imminent arrest, the MLA Basvaraj then moved the Supreme Court seeking relief.
His counsel, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, today denied any link between his client Basvaraj and the prime accused Jagdish in the murder case. Rohatgi’s arguments could not convince the learned judges.
