Ayodhya: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged financial irregularities linked to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has widened its investigation to examine more than ₹124 crore spent on major temple events over the past two years, including the grand consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in January 2024. The development marks a significant expansion of the ongoing probe into the Trust's financial records.

Consecration Expenses Under Scrutiny

According to investigators, the largest expenditure under review is around ₹113 crore spent on the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla on January 22, 2024, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and nearly 8,000 invited guests. Officials are also examining spending related to the Akshat Pujan campaign, publicity and advertisements, temporary infrastructure, decoration and lighting, as well as expenses for other religious events, including preparations for the 2025 Maha Kumbh and the temple's flag-hoisting ceremony.

Audit of Financial Records

As part of the investigation, the SIT is reviewing audit reports, payment vouchers, expenditure statements, bills and chartered accountant records to determine whether funds were utilised in accordance with the Trust's financial procedures and approvals. Authorities have clarified that the scrutiny is aimed at verifying financial compliance and does not, by itself, establish any wrongdoing.

Trust Undergoing Organisational Changes

The financial scrutiny comes amid significant changes within the Trust. In a recent meeting, the Trust accepted the resignation of General Secretary Champat Rai, announced plans to appoint a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and initiated a broader administrative restructuring aimed at strengthening governance and restoring public confidence.

Investigation Continues

Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, and no final conclusions have been reached. The SIT is expected to complete a detailed examination of the Trust's financial records before submitting its findings. The outcome of the probe is likely to play a key role in determining whether any further administrative or legal action is warranted.
