Gajraula: A heartbreaking incident was reported from Gajraula in Uttar Pradesh, where a 26-day-old infant died after allegedly being accidentally suffocated while sleeping between his parents. The tragedy occurred on Saturday night but came to light on Wednesday following statements from family members and local police.

The newborn, Sufian, born on November 10, was the first child of 25-year-old Saddam Abbasi and his wife, Asma. According to relatives, the couple placed their baby between them on the bed before going to sleep, unaware of the danger it posed.

Infant Trapped Between Sleeping Parents

Family members said that in the course of the night, both parents unknowingly turned over in their sleep, causing the baby to get trapped between them. When Asma woke up early Sunday morning to feed her son, she reportedly found him motionless and unresponsive.

Saddam immediately rushed the infant to the Gajraula Community Health Centre, but doctors declared the newborn dead on arrival. Medical staff stated that the cause of death appeared to be suffocation.

Child Specialist Sounds Warning on Co-Sleeping Risks

Doctors noted that Sufian had been fragile since birth, suffering from breathing issues and later jaundice, which may have made him even more vulnerable. Child specialist Dr. Amit Verma cautioned that newborns should not share a bed with adults under any circumstances. According to him, co-sleeping greatly increases the risk of accidental suffocation, especially when infants are placed between sleeping parents.

“Newborns lack the strength and reflexes to free themselves if they are covered or pressed down during sleep,” Dr. Verma explained, stressing the importance of using a separate crib or sleeping arrangement.

Police officials confirmed that no complaint has been lodged in connection with the incident. They stated it appears to be a tragic accident, and no foul play is suspected.

Another Child Death Reported in Uttar Pradesh

In a separate incident in the state, a four-month-old boy was killed after being dragged away by a wild animal from inside his home during the night between Saturday and Sunday. Authorities noted that this marks the ninth child and 11th overall fatality linked to suspected wolf attacks in the region in recent months, prompting heightened concerns among local residents.
