New Delhi: Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian system of architecture, suggests that plants kept at home do more than enhance beauty—they are believed to influence the flow of energy within a living space. While some plants are considered beneficial, others are thought to bring imbalance, stress, and financial difficulties if placed incorrectly.
According to Vastu principles, thorny plants such as cactus should be avoided inside homes or near main entrances. Although roses are considered an exception, other spiky plants are believed to generate negative energy. Experts say they may contribute to tension among family members and disrupt household harmony.
Bonsai plants, despite their aesthetic appeal, are often discouraged in indoor spaces. Vastu suggests that because their growth is intentionally restricted, they symbolically represent blocked progress. Keeping them at home is believed to hinder career growth and personal development of residents.
The presence of a tamarind tree close to a residential area is also considered inauspicious in traditional beliefs. It is associated with negative energy in folklore and Vastu texts. Placing it near a house is thought to increase anxiety, fear, and emotional instability among family members.
Plants that release a white, milk-like sap when cut, such as Calotropis (Madar or Ak), are also discouraged. Vastu beliefs associate them with financial losses and potential health issues, advising homeowners to avoid planting them in living spaces.
Dead or dried plants are considered particularly harmful in Vastu Shastra. They are seen as symbols of decay and negativity. Keeping such plants indoors is believed to drain positive energy and create an atmosphere of stagnation in the home.
Vastu experts recommend maintaining only healthy, vibrant plants at home to encourage positivity, growth, and balance. Removing inauspicious plants is believed to help improve overall well-being and harmony within the household.
