Chennai: Actor Ranbir Kapoor has publicly acknowledged a verbal error he made while speaking about the significance of Dussehra at a promotional event in Kolkata, after a video of his remarks attracted widespread attention online.

Kapoor addressed the controversy a day later at a musical event for Ramayana in Chennai, where he apologised to the audience and clarified that his intended message had been the triumph of truth and righteousness over evil. The actor is set to portray Lord Ram in the forthcoming cinematic adaptation of the epic.

Actor Says His Words Conveyed the Opposite of His Intended Message

The incident occurred on October 20 during Dussehra celebrations in Kolkata, where Kapoor appeared alongside members of the Ramayana team. While explaining the festival's significance, the actor attempted to highlight the enduring message that evil cannot ultimately prevail, irrespective of its strength.

However, a verbal slip altered the meaning of his statement, making it appear that truth and goodness would eventually perish. The discrepancy was captured on video and circulated widely on social media, prompting users to comment on the unusual phrasing.

Kapoor Apologises During Chennai Promotional Event

Addressing the incident at the Chennai event on October 21, Kapoor admitted that he had misspoken and offered an apology. He clarified that he had intended to convey that no matter how powerful evil might be, truth and goodness would ultimately triumph. He described the incident as a slip of the tongue rather than a deliberate statement.

The actor also invoked a song from his 2011 film Rockstar, composed by A R Rahman, to explain how words can sometimes fail to express one's intended meaning. Quoting the line, “Jo bhi main kehna chahoon, barbaad karein alfaaz mere,” Kapoor reiterated his regret over the mistake.

Social Media Focuses on Verbal Slip

The episode became a talking point online after footage of the Kolkata speech began circulating. The contrast between the message associated with Dussehra and the wording used by Kapoor drew particular attention, given his forthcoming portrayal of Lord Ram.

Dussehra commemorates the victory of righteousness over evil and is traditionally associated with Lord Ram's defeat of Ravana. Kapoor's clarification sought to reaffirm that very message.

Ramayana Set for Theatrical Release in November

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is planned as a two-part cinematic adaptation of the Hindu epic. Kapoor plays Lord Ram, while Sai Pallavi portrays Sita and Yash takes on the role of Ravana. Sunny Deol and Ravie Dubey are also part of the cast, playing Hanuman and Lakshman, respectively.

The first instalment is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on November 5, 2026, with the second part planned for 2027.
