Delhi Air Pollution: Difference between BS6, BS5, BS4 vehicle; Which pollute more?

Delhi’s air pollution has reached alarming levels again, raising concerns over vehicle emissions. With BS6, BS5, and BS4 vehicles becoming a common topic, people are confused about their differences and environmental impact. New Delhi: Delhi's air quality has once again reached a critical level. The increasing cold and fog during the winter months, coupled with pollution, have exacerbated the problems for residents. The situation has become so dire that the central and Delhi governments, as well as the courts, have been forced to take strict measures. Meanwhile, terms like BS6, BS5, and BS4 have become part of everyday conversations.

What are BS standards?

BS stands for Bharat Stage emission standards. These regulations determine how much pollution a vehicle can emit into the air. They were implemented to control the toxic fumes emitted by vehicles. As pollution increased over time, the BS standards were made progressively stricter.

Differences between BS4, BS5, and BS6

BS4:
Bharat Stage-4, or BS4, vehicles were implemented nationwide in 2017. They pollute less than BS3 vehicles, but today, BS4 vehicles are considered to be more polluting. In cities like Delhi, BS4 vehicles are among the first to be restricted.

BS5:
BS5 was not implemented in India. It would have been equivalent to Euro-5, but the government, considering time constraints and pollution control, skipped it and implemented BS6 instead. Therefore, BS5 is not a valid standard in India.

BS6:
Bharat Stage-6, or BS6, is the newest and strictest emission standard. It has been in effect since April 1, 2020. BS6 vehicles incorporate technological measures such as diesel particulate filters, selective catalytic reduction, and on-board diagnostic systems. This system continuously monitors the vehicle's pollution levels and controls them when necessary.

Restrictions implemented in Delhi

Given the rising pollution levels in Delhi, the government has imposed restrictions on vehicles with emission standards lower than BS6. The entry of BS3 and BS4 vehicles into Delhi has been banned. However, some previously registered vehicles and those associated with essential services are exempt. The government's objective is to ensure that only the least polluting vehicles are on the roads.

BS6 vehicles are the safest for the environment. BS4 vehicles are now considered outdated technology and are more polluting. It is essential for Delhi residents to choose BS6 vehicles to protect the environment and limit the use of older, high-emission vehicles.
