Duster Is Back on Indian Roads, But the Hybrid Surprise Is Still surprise
New Delhi: The Renault Duster is back and this time it’s rolling out in its third-generation avatar. After a gap of nearly four years, Renault has started delivering the new Duster turbo-petrol variants across the India this month. The SUV, which was officially launched on March 17, has already the started reaching customers as demand picks up. Priced from ₹10.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Duster marks a strong return for one of the most recognizable names in the mid-size SUV segment.
Strong early demand and bookings converted to deliveries
According to dealers, the response to the new Duster has been encouraging. Many early bookings made through ₹21,000 R Pass vouchers are now being converted into confirmed deliveries. The company is reportedly dispatching units to dealerships across the country to meet initial demand.
Built on a new platform with focus on safety and durability
The latest Duster is based on Renault Group’s Modular Platform (RGMP), which has been designed for better durability and performance, especially for Indian road conditions. The SUV measures 4,346 mm in length and comes with a 2,657 mm wheelbase. It also offers a high ground clearance of 212 mm, making it suitable for rough roads and light off-roading. Its approach angle of 26.9 degrees and departure angle of 34.7 degrees further add to its rugged character.
Engine options: turbo petrol performance focus
Renault is offering the new Duster with two turbo petrol engine choices:
Turbo TCe 160: Produces around 163 hp and 280 Nm of torque. It comes with both a 6-speed manual gearbox and a dual-clutch automatic (DCT).
Turbo TCe 100: A more affordable option with 100 hp and 160 Nm, paired with a manual transmission.
These options aim to balance performance with fuel efficiency, depending on buyer preference.
Feature-loaded cabin with modern tech
Inside, the new Duster comes with a modern and tech-focused cabin. It gets a 10.1-inch OpenR Link touchscreen infotainment system with Google integration and a 10.25-inch digital driver display. The SUV also offers more than 60 connected car features and a suite of 17 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control. Comfort features include ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control and a powered tailgate, giving it a more premium feel than before.
While the petrol variants have already started reaching customers, those waiting for the hybrid version will have to be patient. Renault has confirmed that the Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 variant will arrive only around Diwali 2026. This hybrid setup combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 160 hp. The company says the delay is to fine-tune the battery system and improve production planning before launch.
Competitive segment with many rivals
The new Duster enters one of the most competitive SUV segments in India. It will go up against popular models like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, and Volkswagen Taigun. Priced up to ₹18.69 lakh, the Duster is aiming to reclaim its position in a segment it helped popularise when it first launched in India in 2012.
A familiar name with a new direction
With its rugged design, upgraded tech and multiple powertrain options the new Duster is clearly trying to blend its old-school toughness with modern expectations. While petrol models are already on the road, the hybrid version’s delayed arrival means Renault is pacing its electrified push more cautiously.
